A work permit or authorization to work without a permit is required in order for a foreign national to be allowed to work in Canada . Work permits are either issued by agents under the:-  Temporary Foreign Worker program   (LMIA Based Work Permits)   OR International Mobility program   (Work Permit Without LMIA) Temporary Foreign Worker Program The Temporary Foreign Worker Program is an employer driven program, whereby employers must obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to hire foreign workers. This requires the employer to advertise the position that they wish to hire a foreign national for, for at least 4 weeks before filing the LMIA application. By advertising the position for at least 4 weeks, the Canadian employer must demonstrates that there are no qualified Canadians or Permanent Residents with the required skill-sets to take up the position.
